Training Diary: Auditing at Anthony Meindl Actor Workshop London

Writer's picture: Dylan DayDylan Day

As actors, we constantly seek new opportunities to refine our craft, explore our creativity, and challenge ourselves in fresh ways. One of the most renowned training centres for actors globally is the Anthony Meindl Actor Workshop (AMAW). On Wednesday 11th of December, Dylan Day got his own extra-curricular acting training off to a start by hopping on the train to London and attending such a workshop. Dylan found it an inspiring evening, and absorbed the class' mantra: "Step into the Storm". This blog post will share some insights about what AMAW offer and the philosophy behind their approach.

What Is AMAW London?

The Anthony Meindl Actor Workshop (AMAW) is an international network of acting studios founded by Anthony Meindl, a groundbreaking acting coach, author, and filmmaker. The London branch is part of this global community, offering a safe and creative space for actors to explore their craft without the constraints of traditional acting techniques. Located in the heart of the city, AMAW London attracts actors of all levels, from beginners to seasoned professionals.

Their classes are rooted in the belief that acting is about connecting to your truth and trusting your instincts. Instead of relying on rigid methodologies, AMAW focuses on encouraging authenticity and vulnerability, which helps actors bring more of themselves into their work.

What Do They Offer?

AMAW London provides a variety of classes and workshops designed to suit actors at different stages of their careers. Here’s a breakdown of some of their offerings:

Foundation Classes

These are perfect for those new to acting or those looking to revisit the basics. The foundation classes introduce actors to the core principles of AMAW’s philosophy, focusing on getting out of your head and into the moment.

Scene Study Classes

These classes form the backbone of AMAW’s training. Actors work on scenes from film, television, or theatre, with an emphasis on emotional connection and spontaneity. The aim is to unlock the truth of the scene by allowing actors to respond instinctively rather than intellectually.

Workshops and Intensives

Throughout the year, AMAW London hosts special workshops and intensives led by visiting coaches, including Anthony Meindl himself. These sessions often delve deeper into specific aspects of the craft, such as on-camera techniques or audition preparation.

Auditing Classes

For those curious about the AMAW approach, auditing a class is an excellent way to observe the teaching style and see if it aligns with your goals as an actor. Auditors can watch the work being done in class and experience the supportive and collaborative atmosphere.

Who Is Anthony Meindl?

Anthony Meindl is a celebrated acting coach known for his innovative and empowering approach to acting. He challenges the traditional methods of acting training, which often rely heavily on analytical techniques, and instead advocates for a more organic, instinct-driven process.

As an author, Anthony has written several books, including At Left Brain Turn Right, Book the F**ing Job*, and Unstuck, which outline his philosophy and offer practical advice for actors. His work emphasizes the importance of letting go of overthinking, embracing the present moment, and trusting your instincts—principles that form the foundation of AMAW’s teaching.

In addition to his contributions to acting training, Anthony has directed films and continues to be a prominent figure in the entertainment industry. His passion for helping actors unlock their potential is evident in every aspect of his work.

What I Took From the Workshop:

This entry "Training Diary: Auditing at Anthony Meindl Actor Workshop London" will be the first of multiple diary posts as I explore actor training outside of my university setting. Every serious actor should attend workshops and events as much as possible. Acting is a craft, and there is always something to learn. That's what I am beginning to discover - acting is about how much you know yourself.

That's the focus of Anthony Meindl's teaching: don't inhibit who you are. Use it to your advantage. As an actor you are a product. That product must be marketed correctly, kept in top condition, and always upgraded. The best way to know your product or Unique Selling Point (USP) is to ask friends, family, strangers to cast you. A Casting Director - whether we like it or not - will make snap-decisions on who you are. Chameleon actors exist, but in the early stages of your career, nobody will trust you enough for this; you will have to rely on who you are. That means looks, age, personality, ethnicity, sexuality, religion - whatever makes you YOU. Knowing this will make it easier for you to market yourself, and for what roles to apply for.

The Below List is What I Took from the Workshop (Synthesised):

·      Don’t push against who you are – embrace the character you can be

  • You will know your “true” self from what you fear and judge

  • What you avoid should be embraced

    • This is what will challenge you to grow

    • It will also help you to avoid cliche and your own idiosyncrasies because you will become aware of them

  • LISTEN

·      Casting Directors make snap decisions on your casting type based on appearance

·      Don’t solve with your head – do

  • Do what is uncomfortable

·      Touch creates the authenticity of a relationship

·      Don’t be nice to your scene partner – shock them

  • Make them work - "put them in the shit"

  • Don't inhibit your action - if you need to leave the room, leave (your partner will find a way to stop you)

    • If you want to touch someone, do it (so long as you have prior consent, obviously) - they will react

  • LISTEN

·      Don’t work so hard – sit on emotions, feel them

  • Talk from the “gut” – the “feeling”

·      Don’t do the obvious – be contradictory, inappropriate.

  • LISTEN

·      “Load the Plate” – add obstacles for the actors

  • Gives them something to do

  • External pressures affect the situation

·      Follow through on an action, don’t put on the breaks

  • “Step into the Storm”

    • This means that when you feel resistance within yourself or from your partner, keep going. Resistance could be an emotional inhibitor, a sudden pause to overthink, a fear to move or do a certain action. The solution is to embrace this fear and power on. Be spontaneous. Nothing is perfect. Nothing is "right." When you step into the storm, you unlock a part of you that you never knew existed. This is the true you - the you that you have been repressing.

      • In real life, your reflexes are built to protect you. You inhibit certain actions or emotions to save yourself from harm. Acting is about bypassing these defences. It is about rewiring your reflexes.

Conclusion:

The lessons I took from the AMAW workshop were both empowering and transformative. Acting is not just about delivering lines or hitting marks; it’s about breaking free from self-imposed barriers and embracing the raw, unfiltered truth of each moment. By stepping into discomfort, listening deeply, and embracing the unexpected, we can bring authenticity and vibrancy to our performances. If you’re ready to challenge yourself and discover new layers of your craft, AMAW offers an environment that fosters growth, creativity, and connection. Stay tuned for more reflections on my acting journey!
